1. El Chiflon Waterfalls

How does relaxing by these beautiful turquoise waterfalls sound to you? El Chiflon is a series of cascading waterfalls that are surrounded by endless gorgeous views! In the area you can explore different hiking paths and immerse yourself in some action packed adventures, like zip-lining, swimming or even camping by the river! 

 

2. Palenque Ruins

Palenque archaeological site is considered to be one of the most popular Mayen ruins in the whole of Mexico! They are equally as important as Chichen Itza which is listed as one of the seven wonders of the world. 

Palenque is a UNESCO world heritage site and is a great place of importance. The journey is around five hours by car and it’s best to leave at the crack of dawn, so you have a chance to avoid the crowds. You can also break the journey up by stopping at Aqua Azul and admire the beautiful waterfalls, better yet, get in and have a swim!

 

3. El Arcotete

If you would like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life, then El Arcotete Ecological Park is a great go to. It’s located just 6km away in the surrounding mountains, a short 20 minute drive in a car. The entrance fee is only 10 MXN, once inside you can pay extra for activities such as, exploring a cave, rock climbing or soaring through the forest on a zip-line.

 

4. San Juan Chamala

This is a must visit when touring the surrounding areas of San Cristobal. Chamala is one of many indigenous towns, what makes this town extra special is that you can witness unique Mayan catholic rituals. You can hire a local guide to walk you through the local traditions and explain the history and culture. It is forbidden to photograph or video inside the church, which provides a perfect opportunity to be fully present in the moment. Be warned, it can be overwhelming with the intense smoke and live sacrifices, none the less it’s a must see! 

 

5. Huitepec Nature Reserve

This nature reserve is considered to be a pretty special place, mainly due to its rare vegetation and over 300 species of plants, many of which are used for natural medicines. It also has over 40 species of migratory birds, so if you’re a keen bird watcher don’t forget to bring your binoculars to spot some of these beauties! It’s also situated close to Huitpec volcano which in itself is pretty epic. It’s easy to get there, either by collectivo or taxi and the entrance is about 20 MXN. 

 

6. Zinacantán

This a fantastic day trip if you’re looking to immerse yourself in the local culture and witness some of the intricate weaving cooperatives, it is truly special to see! This Maya village showcases beautiful handwoven and embroidered textiles, all created in a traditional way by hand and back strap loom, impressive to say the least! You can visit this quaint little town by taxi or collectivo, it’s only 30 minutes away. 

 

7. Chiapa de Corzo

If you’re looking to tick off as many Pueblo Mágico Towns from your list, then this is a must see. This town offers great food, music and a long history. The town is also famous for its back strap weaving techniques and making corn tortillas over the fire! Although it’s not compulsory to pay for the tortillas, we think it’s a nice gesture to pay a few pesos to help the local families as it’s pretty cool to see and they also taste delicious! Be sure to check out the Marimba museum and the ruins of San Sebastián.

 

8. Cañón del Sumidero

This is without a doubt one of the best day trips to do in the area. If you would like to see some river crocodiles as well as spider monkeys surrounded by gigantic rock faces, epic viewpoints and a whole lot more, then this is a must see. This trip is best done through a tour guide as they will take care of the boat and national park fee and the return transportation. You’ll be cruising down the canyon river on a boat, taking in the beautiful scenery and wildlife! If you have a fantastic time which we’re sure you will, be sure to drop your guide a little tip as tours do not include gratuities. 

 

9. El Aguacero Waterfall

Last but not least is this epic massively underrated waterfall, it’s absolutely stunning and must not be missed on a trip in Chiapas. Head down into the canyon by 700 steps to witness one of the most beautiful waterfalls the region has to offer. This location tends to attract less tourists, who are perhaps put off by the number of steps to climb? Alas, don’t let a little vertical challenge put you off from enjoying one of the most spectacular views there is to behold, one that you might just have the rare chance to enjoy all by yourself! Be sure to take a swim and enjoy all the power that mother nature has to offer!
