Temporary Stay for Digital Nomads
This visa is aimed at remote workers who want to live in Portugal for up to a year. The visa is valid for 1 year and allows multiple entries into Portugal.
The Residence Permit
Digital nomads who enter on a long term visa (residency visa) initially have four months, after that you can then apply for a two year residence permit. This permit can be renewed for an additional 3 years, when you have a total of five years living in Portugal you are then able to apply for a permanent residency permit and Portuguese citizenship. How to Apply
Step 1: Gather the required documents
Before you apply for the Digital Nomad visa ensure you have all the necessary documents to hand. Any documents issued by non EU- countries must be officially authenticated by an Apostille from the country of issuance for use in a different country. You will need the following:
- A valid passport
- Two passport sized photos in colour (4.5 x 3.5 centimeters)
- A cover letter explaining why you want to move to Portugal
- Employment contracts to prove your status as a remote worker
- Bank statements proving your income and savings
- Tax returns or receipts
- A clean criminal record from your home country, this will need to be translated into Portuguese
Keep copies of your Digital Nomad Visa application as you will need them for your residency application.
Step 2: Fill out the Application
Find the form on the Portuguese Foreign Affairs website, fill out the form with the correct detailed personal and financial information. Ensure it all aligns with your supporting documents. Your application form should also specify how you would like your passport returned to you after the application process. Be sure to include your cover letter.
Step 3: Lodge your Application
Submit your application, supporting documents and Portugal Digital Nomad Visa fee to your local Portuguese Consulate, the fee costs €90. For some countries you can book an appointment with VFS Global, which operates like a local Portuguese embassy.
You’ll need to visit the consulate or application centre to give your fingerprints and a photo to be taken by AIMA and submitted as biometric information.
Step 4: Await your Visa
You can track the progress of your application online with a reference number given to you. It typically takes 60 days for your visa to be processed. Once it is approved, you will receive a confirmation email.
You will either go and collect your passport or have it sent via a secure postal service.
Step 5: Enter Portugal and Register as a Resident
If you were approved for the long-term residency visa, you’ll only be issued your initial visa to enter the country, which is valid for four months. Once entering Portugal, you’ll need to visit the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) to apply for your residence card, which is valid for your first two years.
